DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT was founded by Nikita Kamprad (guitar, bass, songwriting) and Tobias Jaschinsky (vocals) in Würzburg, Germany, in early 2009. The self-titled debut album, which was produced and distributed on their own, was sold out within just a few weeks and attracted the attention of the press and various labels.
January 2010, Berlin label Viva Hate Records signed DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT and re-released their debut album – with Christian Bass on drums (meanwhile permanent drummer of Heaven Shall Burn). Shortly after the band had their first live appearance at Friction Fest in Berlin alongside artists such as Bohren & Der Club Gore, Entombed, Crippled Black Phoenix and Amenra followed by support shows for Wolves In The Throne Room and The Black Dahlia Murder.
DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT recorded their EP “Agonie“ with Eike Freese in the Hamburg based Hammer Studios in March 2011. With its release though, Christian Bass left the band and was replaced by Tobias Schuler. This was followed by the first big festival shows at the Summer Breeze Open Air, Barther Metal Open Air and Wolfszeit Festival and support shows for Neaera.
In late 2011, Kamprad produced, mixed and mastered the second full-length album “Unstille”, which was released by Viva Hate Records in June 2012. Sascha Rissling (guitar) and Giuliano Barbieri (bass) officially completed the band as permanent members then.
After a successful headliner tour through Germany and Austria in September 2012, Jaschinsky, however, left the band. With Kamprad taking over the vocals from this point on, the four of them first went on another tour in March 2013 and played Summer Breeze Open Air for a second time.
2014 was dominated by touring France, Germany and Russia and by various international shows including Norway and Israel. In the same year, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT signed to French label Season of Mist and – together with Jan Kerscher, Ghost City Recordings – recorded the long-awaited third album “Stellar” which was celebrated by their fans as well as the industry’s press after its release in March 2015. They took this album on their headliner tour through Europe and played at prestigious international festivals such as Hellfest, Graspop, Resurrection Fest and Roadburn.
After a further headliner tour throughout Europe during Spring 2016, the band performed at the world-famous Wacken Open Air – however, without Barbieri, who had left the band earlier – and shortly after went on tour again supporting Portugal’s Moonspell.
At the beginning of 2017, the fourth album “Finisterre” was recorded at Ghost City Recordings with Kamprad being the producer and mixing engineer once again. Together with the new permanent bassist Nicolas Ziska, the band played selected concerts as support act of Heaven Shall Burn.
After the highly acclaimed release of „Finisterre” in August 2017, the band went on an equally successful headliner release-tour across Europe with sold-out clubs in Paris, Zurich, Strasbourg and Nantes – in the meantime with Nicolas Rausch on guitar, who joined DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT after Rissling had left the band before.
In late summer 2018, the band travelled to Japan to give two concerts after shows in Europe supporting Primordial and Moonsorrow and a festival appearance in Iceland. At the same time, Kamprad was working on the mix for a 80+ minutes live album, which had been recorded during the “Finisterre” release tour on October 14th 2017 at Lido, Berlin. “Live in Berlin” was released in March 2019 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of their first album, followed by a headliner tour across Europe on which the band played their first album in its entirety.
2020 was the year of songwriting: in his own new recording studio Kamprad was working on the songs for the fifth studio album. Once again, it was produced and mixed by Kamprad at Ghost City Recordings with engineering assistance by Jan Kerscher in early Spring 2021. The album tracks were, as far as possible, recorded in a live-setting situation to give the sound a natural character, which optimally reflects the interaction of the band’s musicians – which makes this album the first in the band’s career involving each band member as an equal and integral part.
